A Beautiful Day
There is nothing quite like the energy of a wedding day. It’s a beautiful, fast-paced whirlwind of emotion, details, and once-in-a-lifetime moments. I recently shot my very first wedding, and to say it was an unforgettable experience would be an understatement.
Going into the day, I’ll admit there was plenty of pressure. But stepping into that space, watching the day unfold, and looking at the final images, the biggest takeaway wasn't just technical—it was personal. I learned that I am a capable photographer, and I am so deeply proud of myself. I didn’t let the high-stakes environment get to me, I trusted my eye, and I did it!
Beyond the personal milestone, a wedding day is the ultimate teacher. Here are the biggest lessons I’m taking with me to ensure my future couples have the best experience possible:
Communication is Everything (And No Question is Too Small)
I’ve realized that you can never ask too many questions before the big day arrives. To completely prepare and capture a couple's unique day, having every single detail mapped out beforehand is essential. Moving forward, I’ll be diving even deeper with my couples during pre-wedding consultations so we are completely aligned on the vision and the flow of the day.
Embracing the Reception Flash
Indoor receptions are a beautiful challenge, and I learned firsthand that flash is an absolute must-have for those dim, romantic reception spaces. Because lighting is such a massive factor on a wedding day, I’ll be communicating closely with couples ahead of time to understand the venue's rules on flash photography. My goal is to always balance high-quality, beautifully lit images with preserving the actual ambiance and mood of your celebration.
Finding Confidence in the Chaos
Going into the day, I was a little nervous about managing formal group shots, but I walked away realizing that I am much better at directing family and group photos than I gave myself credit for! Keeping things organized, efficient, and lighthearted keeps the energy high so everyone can get back to celebrating.
When Timelines Bend, Lean Into the Moment
If there is one thing every wedding vendor knows, it’s that timelines are a fantastic guide—but they rarely go exactly to plan. On this day, things were running a bit behind, and I could feel the stress starting to creep in for my couple.
I took a breath and gave them a gentle reminder: “They can’t start without you!”
Instead of forcing them through rigorous, rushed couple portraits while it was raining outside, I chose to let them breathe and just enjoy their moment together. Your wedding day isn't a rigid photoshoot; it’s a milestone in your life.
And honestly? Trusting the universe paid off perfectly.
Because we waited and let the rain pass, we were able to step outside a little later. Right there, stretching across the sky, was a stunning rainbow. We captured the most meant-to-be portraits, all because we chose patience over panic.
Looking Forward
I learned so much from this wedding, but above all, it solidified exactly why I love this work and reminded me of my worth as an artist. I am capable, I am ready, and I can't wait to capture the next love story that comes my way.
